Wisdom Teeth / Oral Surgery

What is the wisdom teeth removal procedure?

Your dentist or oral surgeon will walk you through the entire process — before, during, and after — and answer any questions you may have.

Depending on your needs, the procedure may be done under local or general anaesthetic, and your provider will guide you through the best option for your comfort.

In many cases, wisdom teeth don’t need to be removed. But when they become impacted (trapped under the gum or pushing against other teeth), they can lead to pain, swelling, and infection — making removal necessary.

Infected or impacted teeth may be removed by your dentist or, in more complex cases, referred to a specialist oral surgeon.

Preparing for wisdom teeth removal

Before your procedure, your dentist will provide instructions based on your specific needs. For example:

  1. You may be asked to stop smoking to improve healing
  2. If general anaesthesia is used, you’ll likely need to fast for at least 6 hours

Your dentist will explain the type of anaesthetic that’s most suitable and guide you through what to expect during your recovery.

When do wisdom teeth become a problem?

Wisdom teeth can cause a range of issues, especially when there isn’t enough room for them to grow properly. Common problems include:

  • Tooth decay

  • Gum disease

  • Recurring mouth infections

  • Abscesses in the gums

If you’re experiencing pain, swelling, or discomfort around your wisdom teeth — don’t wait. Contact us today to book an assessment and get the relief you need.

What happens during the procedure?

The process varies depending on how deeply impacted your wisdom teeth are. And most procedures take around 20 minutes, although complex cases can take longer.

Simpler extractions

  • The area is numbed with local anaesthetic

  • The tooth is gently loosened and removed using a special tool

More complex cases

  • A small incision may be made in the gum

  • A portion of jawbone may need to be removed to access the tooth

  • The tooth is extracted, and stitches may be placed to aid healing
